As I was putting my collection together of hot drinks that were family-friendly, I wanted something else that wasn’t hot chocolate or apple cider. I started searching around and come across hot buttered rum drinks. I was very intrigued, to say the least. I learned that buttered rum drinks are made with a batter that is kept in the freezer – at least the type I found, and then you make up a cup as you want one.
This hot drink is like nothing else I have ever had. I’ve had all my family try this very exceptional beverage and they all say it’s amazing and one you need to try. Rich, distinctive and outstanding.
Nonalcoholic Hot Buttered Rum Drink
Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoon rum extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 – .74 oz. package apple cider mix, dry mix
1 pint or 2 cups vanilla ice cream
Directions:
With an electric mixer, cream together the butter, sugars, nutmeg, cinnamon, extracts, and cider mix until well blended.
Add in the vanilla ice cream
Mix until combined.
Pour into a freezer container with a tight-fitting lid.
Seal and freeze. It will not freeze solid.
To serve, scoop enough to fill a mug about half full.
Add boiling water to fill 2/3 the way up and stir to dissolve.
Serve.

Hello Carrie,
I am planning on making this for a holiday party. If I want to make a big batch of it, would you say 1-1 water to mixture? or 1.5-1 water to mixture?
Thanks,
Zach
Hello Zach,
I am SO excited you stopped by and I hope your company loves this drink as much as we do. It’s so nice to have something other than hot chocolate and cider for variety.
Please forgive my explanation, but when I served this drink to a large family gathering this is what I did:
I kept hot water in dispensers (like the large orange one or the metal ones) in this post here: https://amothersshadow.com/neighborhood-hot-cocoa-bar/ you might get some tips for a large party also:)
Then I had the mixed Nonalcoholic Hot Buttered Rum Drink Batter in a nicer bowl/container over ice for people to make up as they wanted – with a little sign/instruction card. It worked well so that people could make it up as they wanted it and was easy and no waste. I put leftover frozen batter back in the freezer.
If you are looking for more ideas for your party, you might want to check out my post 9 Fabulous Family Friend Hot Drinks. https://amothersshadow.com/9-fabulous-family-friendly-hot-drinks/
Tip: For the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate recipe, if you have a grocery store that has bins with spices, it’s very inexpensive to have a hickory and 1-2 other types of salts for that one.
Thank you for asking, and hopefully others will find this helpful too.
Have a terrific party!
Carrie
